From Screenings to Workforce Development: Meet Local Business BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services

Post Date:05/14/2026 7:28 PM

Last month, the Charles County Economic Development Department (EDD) recognized Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, celebrating the contributions of laboratory professionals to the well-being of Charles County’s residents. This week’s blog spotlights China Coleman, owner of BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services, a local business focused on providing accessible diagnostic, testing, and screening services to the Charles County community.

Established in 2020, BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services offers medical screenings, fingerprinting, pre-employment services, and drug testing for both individuals and employers. Coleman said the business was built around creating a trusted and reliable space where community members can access important healthcare services quickly and professionally.

“Diagnostic health screenings are important for understanding all things possible when it comes to getting to know your body and supporting your overall health,” Coleman shared. Since many screenings can help identify concerns early, she emphasized the importance of timely care and fast turnaround times for patients. “We take pride in making sure that your results are fast,” she said.

In addition to individual screenings, BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services provides comprehensive drug screening services for employers, including Department of Transportation testing for trucking companies and other industries where workplace safety is critical.

Since opening BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services, Coleman has become actively involved in the local business community through involvement in many county organizations, like the Charles County Chamber of Commerce. Through those connections, she has built relationships with local leaders, fellow entrepreneurs and business owners, and mentors while learning more about the resources available to small businesses in Charles County.

One resource Coleman credited with supporting her growth as a business owner is the Charles County Economic Development Department’s Business Growth Advantage Program (BGAP). Through the program, she gained insight into the fundamentals of owning and operating a business while learning directly from experienced professionals and business leaders.

“I am a very social person, so naturally I try to talk to everyone,” Coleman shared. “Being part of BGAP gave me the opportunity to be in those rooms and utilize my talents. It taught me not to be afraid to talk to people because they can show you so much.”

Coleman said the experience also helped her better understand how to approach different business relationships and navigate important aspects of entrepreneurship, including financial management and seeking guidance when needed.

“You have to learn how to approach certain people in different ways, especially when it comes to financing and making sure everything’s in order,” she said. “And most importantly, not being afraid to ask for help.”

Building on her own professional journey, Coleman launched the BioTrendz Internship Program (BIP) to help prepare the next generation of healthcare and medical professionals. The 12-week program offers hands-on learning opportunities and certifications for individuals interested in pursuing careers in healthcare and medical services. The internship program is open on a rolling basis to interested high school and college students. Participants gain foundational experience, practical skills, and exposure to career pathways within the healthcare field. High school or college students can apply on a rolling basis at info@biotrendz.com

As both a business owner and longtime community member, Coleman said her commitment to Charles County remains central to her work and long-term vision of growth for BioTrendz Laboratory & Screening Services. Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, she encourages aspiring business owners to connect with local resources and take advantage of the support systems available throughout Charles County.

“Talk to your county representatives and connect with people you see who are successful,” Coleman advised. “They’re willing to share information, and they want to see you succeed.”
