Looking Local: Owner of Four Charles County McDonald’s Restaurants Shares Recipe for Business Success

Posted by: Economic Development Team on Monday, June 26, 2017

For our latest edition of “Looking Local,” we spoke to Andrew Welburn, president of The Welburn Organization, which owns and operates five McDonald’s restaurants in Southern Maryland.

In May 2015, Andrew Welburn and his wife, Jillian, purchased five McDonald’s franchises in Southern Maryland from McDonald’s Corporate Operating Company, including four locations in Charles County, with sites in Waldorf and La Plata.

The Welburns now employ more than 200 workers in Charles County alone.

Charles County Department of Economic Development (EDD): Why did you choose to expand your business in Charles County?

Andrew Welburn (AW): When we were initially offered to purchase the restaurants, we did not know much about the County. However, upon completing our due diligence, we were impressed with Charles County in many ways. The growing population, dynamic workforce, and strong sense of community set this County apart from others that we had considered.

EDD: What is your favorite part about working in Charles County?

AW: My favorite part about doing business in Charles County is the collaboration between the business community and the institutions. We have been able to partner with the College of Southern Maryland, the sheriff’s department, and many non-profits in order to improve both our business and the communities in which we do business! Improving the community is very important to me, as I am a proud resident of Charles County.

EDD: What do you feel are the main advantages of doing business in the County?

AW: An extremely dedicated Economic Development Department and Chamber of Commerce set Charles County apart from other communities in Maryland.

EDD: Are there any new innovations you’re bringing to the industry?

AW: We currently offer college tuition reimbursement, free English classes and a free GED program for all of our employees. Also, within a month or two we will be among the first McDonald’s locations in the country to implement mobile ordering, mobile pay and curbside pickup.

EDD: Are there any other news or updates that you would like to share?

AW: Yes, we are proud to announce that our company recently acquired another restaurant in Charles County! Please come and visit us at the Pinefield McDonald’s!
