Partners and CPAs Robert and Cathy Askey

In the years since Robert and Cathy Askey established their accounting and advisory firm, Askey, Askey & Associates, they’ve helped shape the business climates of Charles and neighboring St. Mary’s Counties . A commitment to aspiring businesses, individual clients, and continuing education cemented their success. Operating offices in Leonardtown and La Plata, they supply the demand for wealth management and business expertise. “We’re staying very busy—and growing,” Cathy Askey states with enthusiasm.

Passionate about business and workforce development, Askey speaks highly of the resources available to local business owners. “I do see the Economic Development Department in Charles County working very hard to attract and retain existing customers,” she observes. The firm participates in Charles County’s Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program, which identifies and addresses community and business needs. Seeing themselves as ambassadors of area business development, the Askeys send employees to the Economic Development Department’s quarterly business roundtables to keep tabs on the initiatives impacting their clients. “We keep up with what’s going on in economic development so that we can represent our clients in the county and help them get results,” says Askey.

Askey celebrates the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) as a front-line resource essential to local businesses. She teaches a record-keeping course at CSM’s Small Business Development Center, which she recognizes as an opportunity to give back to Charles County. “We’re expanding the knowledge of people in the community,” she states.

Believing that education “is a confidence builder like no other,” Askey encourages her team to seek higher education at every opportunity. Today, eight of the firm’s employees have earned their CPA licenses, and three are studying for the exam, which is a significant milestone, both personally and professionally. The Askeys encourage all team members to continue their educations as lifelong learners.

The Askeys love the work-life balance offered in Charles County, as opposed to Washington, D.C. or Baltimore. The amenities and affordable real estate attract professionals seeking advancement—without the aggravating commutes. Their locations in Charles and St. Mary’s Counties help employees work close to their homes and children’s schools, spending less time on the road and more time with their families. Undoubtedly, the firm’s commitment to quality opportunities fuels Charles County’s long game. “These communities are developing and becoming self-sufficient,” Askey says proudly.

Askey encourages businesses interested in moving or expanding to Charles County to take advantage of existing business resources and networks. She stresses the value of the military bases in Indian Head, Dahlgren, and Pax River to employment and business retention and touts CSM’s job training programs.

Askey, Askey & Associates has benefitted from the business support offered in Charles County, and pays it forward to boost opportunities for others. To learn more about the county’s workforce, incentives, and assets, explore our Business Support page!
