The Charles County Economic Development Department (EDD) is part of an exciting workforce development initiative that will boost Southern Maryland’s economic development, develop a strong workforce pipeline, and improve local workforce skills. Lead by the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), the EDD is collaborating with the Southern Maryland Workforce Development Board and other education and economic development partners in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties to make Southern Maryland an ACT Work Ready Community (ACT WRC).
What Is An ACT Work Ready Community?
ACT Work Ready Communities (WRC) empower states, regions, and counties with data, processes and tools that drive economic growth. Participants can leverage the ACT® WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate® (NCRC®) to measure and close the skills gap — and build common frameworks that link, align, and match their workforce development efforts.
The ACT® WorkKeys® NCRC® is a community initiative that provides workers with essential work skills and certifies those skills through assessment tests. Companies using the ACT WorkKeys NCRC for hiring have reported reduced turnover, improved efficiency, reduction in waste, higher employee morale, and reduced training times.
Communities are certified as “work ready” when they meet established goals in both the number of individuals earning the ACT WorkKeys NCRC and the level of employer participation.
The ACT WorkKeys NCRC verifies foundational workforce skills needed to succeed and can be used across industries to improve job seekers’ skills and capabilities. This credential, used in combination with other selection tools, can improve hiring, training, and promotion decisions.
