Recent census data recognized Charles County as the most affluent African-American/Black-majority county in the country, with the number of Black families who earn more than $200,000 quadrupling from 2009 to 2020. According to the American Community Survey (ACS), in 2019, the African-American/Black population rose above 50%, making Charles County a Black majority county. The Charles County Economic Development Department prioritizes investing in its business community by offering various services, resources, funding assistance, and programs. Two programs are especially geared toward helping small businesses seek opportunities procuring government contracts: the Minority & Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) Program assists minority and women-owned businesses in participating in county government procurement, and the Small Local Business Enterprise (SLBE) Program supports certified small businesses in gaining exclusive access to certain county government procurements and preferences for others.
