Charles County Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

Posted by: Economic Development Team on Thursday, September 15, 2022

We’re celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, in Charles County to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans who have inspired others to achieve success and shape our country. This national event began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover 30 days. The Charles County Economic Development Department wants to recognize a handful of our own Hispanic businesses in Charles County who foster growth in our local economy, keep money close to home, and support our community.

Mariachis Tequileria and Restaurant

Mariachis Tequileria and Restaurant is a family-owned, Mexican-style restaurant dedicated to providing a vibrant, fun, and safe environment for our community to enjoy delicious food, world class cocktails, and unique entertainment. Located in Waldorf, they are also the site for the first Charles County Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta taking place on September 17, noon to 5 pm.

Vamos Hablar, LLC

Vamos Hablar, LLC, meaning “Let’s Talk,” goes above and beyond to cater to each client’s specific needs while providing paralegal, translation, and interpretation services. Through open communication and exceptional service, the Waldorf business hopes customers find what they’re looking for, especially with their Spanish/English translation services.

Vamos Hablar, LLC has been in business since 2018, and founder Debborah Collins has been in the Charles County area for over 20 years. She founded the business to assist homeschooled students in need of tutoring in Spanish I, ll, & lll, but the need for tutoring, interpretation and translation of documents became greater.

As a former Charles and Prince Georges Counties K-12 Spanish teacher, Collins says, "Learning to speak more than one language is the key to many open doors and a gift to give another person that seeks to broaden their thinking when it comes to other cultures."

SH Tag & Title

Servicios Hispanos (Hispanic Services) was formally established in 2019 to help provide services to the Latin American and immigrant community, and  SH Tag & Title was the first entity formed under Servicios Hispanos. SH Tag & Title is licensed by the MVA in Waldorf and located close to the Waldorf Fire Department.

They offer tags and titles for personal and commercial vehicles, notary public, translation services, and assistance with some government and state forms. They do their best to help the community with their questions and concerns, to include establishing an LLC. "If we don't have an answer, we will point you in the right direction," they say. In addition, they opened La Tiendona Grocery in June 2021, which offers mainly Central American products, as well as check cashing and other monetary services. They are expanding their products to service other communities and look forward to continuing to bridge relationships and gaps by providing a wide variety of products and services.

Recognizing our Hispanic businesses not only highlights the diversity of Charles County, but also reiterates the importance of investing in local communities. Support our local businesses all year around by shopping local.
