On May 31, a delegation from Walldorf, Germany visited Charles County as a part of a longstanding sister city partnership with Waldorf, Maryland. The two communities have been sister cities since 1997, with a partnership that has served as a platform for cultural exchange, educational collaboration, and economic development initiatives.
The Charles County Economic Development had the pleasure of hosting our guests for this one-day tour of the county. We reserved a 35-passenger executive bus and discussed economic development, education, and tourism, among other points throughout the day and at the following stops.
Stop #1: Charles County Government Building

Our visitors started off the day with a welcome from our Board of County Commissioners, a proclamation, introductions, and an overview of the day.
Stop #2: North Point High School

In 2007, a delegation from Walldorf, Germany visited North Point High School to present a Heidelberg printing press that was donated by Heidelberg Printing Press Corporation, headquartered in Walldorf, Germany. On this trip, they wanted to learn more about our educational system and look into how we can build and foster partnerships within our educational systems, maybe even through student exchanges. The North Point orchestra played, and lunch was provided by the school’s Culinary Arts students. A presentation was given on Charles County Public Schools CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs, and the Germany delegation received a poster created by North Point’s Graphics Communications students. Two cadets from the Waldorf Fire & EMS High School Cadet Program also shared.
Stop #3: Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department

The German delegation was very excited to visit the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and toured the facilities, engines, and trucks. They got a tour of Fire #3, exchanged gifts, rode on the aerial truck, and had great dialogue.
Stop #4: Historic Old Waldorf School

The tour finished with a lovely networking dinner at the Historic Old Waldorf School, which included members of the business community, state and local elected officials, and community stakeholders.

Benefits of Sister Cities
The benefits of sister city relations can include business and trade relations, community development, youth and educational exchanges, and arts and cultural exchanges. It's a great opportunity for Charles County entrepreneurs and businesses to scale up their level of business engagement on an international level. Also, it allows opportunities for residents to collaborate and participate in foreign exchange programs, which can
- enhance collaboration between local partners,
- expose the county to the global community,
- attract tourism,
- and improve the business climate and other economic opportunities.
This strengthened sister city partnership will pave the way for continued collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic development initiatives between Walldorf, Germany, and Waldorf, Maryland.
The visit by the Walldorf delegation serves as a testament to the enduring bonds established between sister cities. As global connections become increasingly vital, these partnerships provide a framework for communities to share knowledge, foster understanding, and build a brighter future together.
