From October 23 to October 27, we observe Economic Development Week in Maryland, a period dedicated to underscoring the critical role economic development plays in our state and communities. It is an occasion to deepen our collective understanding and appreciation for the industry’s significant contributions to Maryland's business environment, job landscape, tax foundation, and general quality of life.
To recognize the work of Maryland’s economic developers, Economic Development Week events will occur in towns, cities, and counties across the state. Throughout the week, proclamations will highlight the pivotal projects that make Maryland a great place to live and work.
Charles County’s 2023 Economic Development Week celebrations have commenced with a proclamation issued by the Charles County Board of Commissioners on October 3.
What is Economic Development?
Economic development is the creation and distribution of wealth to benefit an entire community, characterized by the sustained, concerted actions of policymakers and communities that promote the standard of living and economic health.
At the local level, economic development involves the strategic allocation of limited resources – land, labor, capital, and entrepreneurship – to foster business activity, employment, equitable income distribution, and fiscal solvency, thereby enhancing the quality of life in a community.
It represents a deliberate collective effort by governing bodies to guide private sector investment towards opportunities conducive to enduring economic prosperity. Such prosperity yields adequate incomes for the local workforce, lucrative ventures for employers, and tax revenues essential for maintaining infrastructure supportive of continuous growth.
