A Recap of Charles County’s 2025 Business Appreciation Week

Posted by: Economic Development Team on Thursday, May 15, 2025

In every corner of Charles County, small and locally owned businesses do more than offer goods and services--they are helping shape our communities, supporting families, and providing jobs. From local cafés that know coffee orders by heart, to restaurants that serve as gathering places, and boutiques that bring unique style to the area, these businesses form the backbone of Charles County’s economy.

That’s why from May 5–9, Charles County proudly celebrated its annual Business Appreciation Week, National Small Business Week, and Economic Development Week, a dedicated time to recognize and support the entrepreneurs and businesses who keep Charles County moving forward. The hard work, innovation, and resilience of Charles County’s businesses and owners are what make Charles County flourish. The 2025 celebration featured ribbon cuttings, hands-on workshops, and personal visits with business owners to showcase the wide range of industries and entrepreneurs contributing to the local economy.

“As we reflect on the success of this year’s Business Appreciation Week, we extend our gratitude to every business that calls Charles County home,” said Acting Director of Economic Development Michelle Frye. “When our businesses succeed, our whole community benefits and our entire economy thrives. Business Appreciation Week gives us a valuable opportunity each year to be on the ground—listening to business owners, understanding their needs, and connecting them with the resources, partnerships, and support that help them grow.”

The events of Business Appreciation Week were developed to provide meaningful support to the Charles County business community. Here are a few highlights from the week:

Support for New and Existing Businesses

To celebrate the growth of new businesses within the community, the week began with ribbon-cutting ceremonies for My Sweet Baby Learning Center and Gia Candle Bar, two exciting new additions to Charles County’s business community.

On Tuesday, the Charles County Board of Commissioners honored local businesses by issuing an official proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week, National Small Business Week, and Economic Development Week.

“Bringing these recognitions together this year created a valuable opportunity to underscore the vital role locally owned businesses play in our economy,” shared Frye. “It also allowed us to showcase successful economic development efforts and strengthen collaboration among business owners, community leaders, and stakeholders.”

Business owners, community leaders, and stakeholders came together to support long-term business success. To help local businesses navigate challenges and continue growing, the EDD hosted a Business Wellness Workshop at the Waldorf West Library. Attendees had the chance to hear from experts on key topics and connect with local resource partners.

The workshop received positive feedback, with participants appreciating the wide range of topics covered and suggesting ideas for future sessions to further support their business growth.

The Power of Local Connections

To better understand local business needs, the EDD regularly engages directly with business owners and entrepreneurs. These ongoing conversations help inform programs, services, and priorities that support the business community.

Midweek, on Wednesday and Thursday, the EDD joined community leaders and elected officials on a series of business visits across the county. Over two days, ambassadors connected with 29 businesses, including restaurants, boutiques, event venues, childcare centers, real estate offices, cafés, salons, and more. These visits offered a chance to hear directly from business owners, recognize their achievements, and strengthen connections across industries.

To close out the week, the EDD partnered with the Charles County Chamber of Commerce to host a Business Networking Mixer at The Charles Restaurant and Bar. The event gave business owners the opportunity to build relationships, increase visibility, and explore potential collaborations—all while celebrating the diversity and strength of the local business community.
