The board of directors bears responsibility for the nonprofit organization’s health and its very survival. As the legal governing body, it needs to establish plans and policies that keep the organization focused on its mission and that assure financial stability and sound management. This course covers the basic elements involved in achieving and sustaining a board that does all this effectively: examine the relationship between levels of board performance and the organization’s development potential; address the process of sustaining teamwork; define the board’s job with respect to fundraising; and incorporate strategic thinking into decision making. The course will concentrate on the principles of leadership and how embracing them empowers a board to act with a consistent eye to the future, including careful planning for turnover and succession.
