MedStar Medical Group, joined by Charles County Government, announce that they broke ground on Wednesday, Aug. 28, to mark the start of construction for a 51,000-square-foot, three-story medical facility at 10 Saint Patrick’s Drive in Waldorf. A second 20,000-square-foot facility is planned for the nearby Waldorf Technology Center at Berry Road and US Route 301.  The two ambulatory medical office buildings will house MedStar Shah’s expanding operations and expand access to healthcare services for Charles County residents.
“We know that many of our highly-skilled healthcare workers commute out of the county every day to jobs elsewhere,” said Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. “We hope that this will expand options for our residents to work closer to home.”
The Charles County Economic Development Department has collaborated with MedStar Shah Medical Group since late 2017.
Economic Development Director Darréll Brown said, “We know that many of our residents are getting medical care from providers outside the county. We believe Dr. Shah’s facility will help stem that flow. We also have a skilled workforce, with a significant number in the medical field. This facility will provide job opportunities for our residents.”
Dr. Vinod K. Shah, the founder and CEO of MedStar Shah Medical Group said, “MedStar Health, in partnership with their local physicians, have committed to invest $25 million in this project. We believe at least 80 new jobs will be created in our area, and this building will reduce the burden of traveling to D.C. and Baltimore for our patients.”
The new facility will include fully integrated healthcare on three floors with primary care, medical specialties, and diagnostics all in the same location. Medical services and operations will include, but not be limited to, primary care, cardiology, outpatient surgery, sleeping disorders, and phlebotomy. The three-story main building will also contain a pharmacy. The smaller building at the Waldorf Center Technology Park will house additional medical specialties.
“The hallmark of the future of healthcare is the distributed care delivery network,” said Dr. Shah. “Having a center of excellence of this magnitude, working with our local and tertiary care hospital, will provide excellent care to the people of our community.”
Originally founded 45 years ago as a three-physician practice, MedStar Shah Medical Group has grown to include over more than 100 physicians and specialists in fourteen 14 locations to make the doctors more accessible to patients. The practice is modeled after the concept of a distributed care delivery network, taking healthcare services from larger cities like Washington, D.C. to smaller communities like Charles County.
