Posted by: Economic Development Team on Tuesday, March 12, 2024

Sydney Garner, the new Charles County Economic Development Department’s (EDD) Agriculture and Rural Development Manager, brings a deep-rooted passion to her role. Her interest began while growing up on her family’s grain farm, and it has developed into her professional role in nurturing the agricultural landscape in Charles County. Join us in welcoming her to this essential position in the EDD!

As the EDD’s Agricultural and Rural Development Manager, Sydney is entrusted with developing, marketing, and implementing programs and initiatives that bolster local agricultural and resource-based businesses. Leveraging her knowledge of agricultural economics and her hands-on experience in the field, she nurtures sustainable growth and resilience within the local agricultural community. Her responsibilities also extend to fostering partnerships that support and expand local agricultural activities and rural development.

Before her tenure with the EDD, Sydney interned at the Central Equipment Parts Department, learning more about managing inventory and logistics, and she facilitated agricultural activities for local youth with the Charles County Extension 4-H. Sydney's background also includes lab research at the University of Kentucky, where she completed a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science and a minor in Agricultural Economics. These experiences laid the foundation for her current role, where she applies her versatile skill set to drive agricultural development in Charles County.

Sydney’s commitment to Charles County is reflected not only in her professional endeavors but also in her volunteer work. As a Maryland 4-H Adult Volunteer and a former member of the Maryland State Junior Fair Board, she has consistently dedicated her time and expertise to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

One of Sydney’s favorite parts of Charles County is “the diverse landscape and access to the water.” She says these aspects make the area a beautiful place that is “highly suitable for agriculture and aquaculture.” Outside of her professional pursuits, Sydney is an avid supporter of local businesses. Among her favorites is Centerpiece Boutique in La Plata, where she enjoys browsing their selection of clothes and accessories.

Sydney Garner’s contributions to Charles County continue to champion the interests of local producers and cultivate opportunities for growth for the future of agriculture in Charles County.
