"The Charles County Chamber of Commerce plays a vital role in strengthening our local business ecosystem and is an essential partner in the Charles County Economic Development Department’s (EDD) Circle of Services—a collaborative network of state, local, and regional partners. From offering legislative advocacy and facilitating valuable events and connections, the Chamber empowers businesses to grow and thrive at every stage.

Representing over 500 businesses and impacting more than 15,000 people, the Chamber’s influence extends beyond county borders. With membership open to any business invested in Charles County, regardless of physical location, the Chamber offers strategic advantages to businesses seeking to connect with new clients, expand their networks, and access a wide range of support services.

Here are several key ways the Charles County Chamber of Commerce benefits business owners in Charles County:

  • Networking Opportunities: Free networking events, Chamber 101 orientations, seminars, workshops, and Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting ceremonies.
  • Marketing: Free listings in the print and online Membership Directory, new member recognition in the eNewsletter and on the website, and promotion of Hot Deals, Member-to-Member offers, press releases, and job postings.
  • Advocacy: Representation on state and local legislative matters through the Chamber’s Legislative Committee, along with opportunities to engage in advocacy efforts, receive updates on legislative issues, and connect with elected officials.
  • Business Support: Access to business referrals, resources, sponsorship opportunities, and affordable corporate partnership programs.

"I encourage every business that approaches us to stay excited, but also to take a realistic approach to their goals, focusing on what they can accomplish right here and right now so we can build upon that for future growth," says Kathy Guzman, President and CEO of the Chamber. “Grow not just with the Chamber but alongside our network of businesses and partners.”

One powerful example of the Chamber’s support is Zen Wellness Studio, led by Janine Horne, MSN-Ed, RN, AHN-BC. Initially offering mobile services, Janine sought guidance from the EDD in helping to transition to a physical location. The EDD connected her to the Chamber of Commerce, where she found the resources and partnerships to help her grow.

Guzman recalls, “Janine and I met at Starbucks one day, and we talked about the many benefits of leveraging local resources, such as the Charles County Economic Development Department, the Small Business Development Center, and the Tri-County Council of Southern Maryland. While guidance is important, it's ultimately up to the business owner to take action and put in the work. Janine embraced the advice, took the necessary steps, and made the connections that ultimately allowed her to reach her business goals.”

Less than two years after the initial meeting, Zen Wellness Studio celebrated its ribbon-cutting at a physical location in White Plains, Maryland. In 2025, Janine's success story came full circle when she was elected to the Chamber’s Board of Directors and appointed Chair of the Mental Health and Wellness Expo, where she continues to lead workshops and offer invaluable support to other local businesses.

"The Chamber of Commerce is an important partner within the Circle of Services," says Michelle Frye, EDD Deputy Director. "Many businesses in the county face common challenges, and having the Chamber act as a liaison to help businesses navigate those challenges, while also serving as a strong advocate, is crucial for their success. Their ability to support and guide businesses while working alongside Economic Development and other Circle of Services partners helps create a stronger, more resilient business community in Charles County."

Guzman adds, “When a member needs resources or requires support, we can quickly connect them to the right person at the Economic Development Department. The strength of our collaboration is so seamless that many see us as one and the same — and that’s exactly how it should be for Charles County business owners. We are here to help.”
