Expanding Charles County’s Global Footprint Through Sister City Partnership with Matola, Mozambique

Posted by: Economic Development Team on Thursday, June 5, 2025

Charles County is taking another strategic step onto the global stage.

Next week, Charles County will host a distinguished delegation from Matola, Mozambique, to formalize our new Sister City partnership. The agreement will deepen our community’s international ties, and it will also set the stage for long-term support for our economic and community development goals.

While the formal ceremony will mark the historic occasion, the real story lies in what comes next: the opportunity to turn shared values into shared ventures.

The Power of Sister Cities

Sister City partnerships have often been thought of as ceremonial or symbolic. However, with the modern need to compete in a global marketplace, these partnerships can be powerful tools for creating tangible economic, educational, and cultural impact.

Through structured engagement, Sister Cities offer a way to localize globalization, enabling communities like Charles County to attract foreign investment, stimulate innovation, create educational exchange programs, and amplify cultural assets on an international scale.

Charles County’s existing partnerships with Walldorf, Germany (est. 2002) and Jõgeva, Estonia (est. 2012) offer a strong example of the benefits of Sister Cities. What began as cultural and community connections has grown to include educational dialogue and cross-sector collaboration.

With the impending Matola partnership, Charles County is adding a new partner and a new set of possibilities for our community’s future.

Planned Collaboration

Charles County’s relationship with Matola (Mozambique’s second-largest city and a major economic hub in southern Africa) was first established in 2019. Despite delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, our connection persisted through continued dialogue, now culminating in an official partnership.

By identifying core areas for cooperation, including trade promotion and tourism, our two jurisdictions have identified a practical framework to maximize the value of this partnership and ensure we have active collaboration. As part of this partnership, we will establish bilateral working committees to identify and advance joint initiatives that support our shared goals.

Potential projects may include student and faculty exchanges, trade or joint ventures for local businesses, co-hosting cultural events, and sharing models of workforce development, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

The Delegation Visit

From June 9 to 13, Charles County will host the Matola delegation for a weeklong visit featuring a planned itinerary focused on dialogue, information sharing, and relationship-building.

Itinerary highlights include:

  • June 10: The official signing ceremony, followed by visits with local leaders and business organizations.
  • June 11-12: Site visits to Charles County Public Schools and small businesses such as Landon’s Ices & Creams and Honey Bun Cake Factory, and agricultural enterprises including Serenity Farm and Zekiah Ridge Farm & Flowers.
