Education

Education is part of what helps Charles County attract and keep a strong workforce. Families have access to local schools and nearby higher education options, and employers benefit from a region with established pathways for learning, training, and career development. From K–12 to college and workforce programs, Charles County supports the pipeline that helps people build skills and businesses build teams.

Charles County Public Schools (K-12)

Charles County Public Schools provide a well-rounded curriculum that equips students with the critical thinking and communication skills needed for long-term success. The school system includes 37 schools and 7 educational centers, serving students across 21 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 7 high schools.

With a focus on preparing a future-ready workforce, Charles County emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), along with programs in cybersecurity, robotics, and coding. Students can explore these interests through 33 Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways designed to connect classroom learning with real-world skills.

In addition to its public schools, Charles County’s 7 educational centers expand learning opportunities and resources for students and families. These include the Early Learning Centers in La Plata and Waldorf, F.B. Gwynn Educational Center, James E. Richmond Science Center, Judy Center, Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Center, and the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center.

Higher Education

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a regionally-accredited community college offering a variety of learning options, student services, and workforce development support. Designed in response to workforce needs, CSM’s programs in computer science, cybersecurity, homeland security, and information systems grow opportunities and minds. The Regional Hughesville Campus serves as a catalyst for growth in Charles County. Its 30,000-square-foot Center for Trades and Energy Training (CT Building) provides residents with direct access to specialized instruction in construction, skilled trades, and energy-related fields.

The 50,000-square-foot Center for Health Sciences building features advanced labs and simulation spaces supporting programs in nursing, emergency medical services, rehabilitation, wellness and fitness, health information management and medical coding, medical laboratory technology, medical assisting, and pharmacy technician training. Together, these facilities foster an environment of achievement and maintain a skilled workforce pipeline ready for opportunities in Charles County.

The University of Maryland Extension of Charles County comprises the off-campus educational arm of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
